Viana do Castelo

Viana, is heir to a genuine crafts and folklore , making the High Minho one of the richest ethnographic regions with the most beautiful expressions of Portuguese crafts. For generations, the teaching of needlework and crafts was entrusted to Minho young girls who spun, wove and embroider to constitute their wedding outfit and make their traditional costume.



Dating back from the second decade of the twentieth century the assumption of the importance of regional embroidery Viana, fruit of an exhibition carried out in this city. Since then, it has been claimed permanently by the attention and devotion of Viennese who appreciate this art, which initially broke the simple application of linen yarn, and soon took the cotton yarn that drank blue and red, then moving to use more colors, like green, yellow, purple or orange.



The embroidery of Viana do Castelo was certified in 2011, providing, in the future, a sustainable existence, and ensuring a constant affirmation and renewal. In its own beauty, it includes embroidered wool - more pointedly that marks our traditional costumes - and embroidered linen or cotton, used more and more characterized as such. The themes, the result of thought and individual nature, but predominates in them the pain of brambles and aggression, love, this heart-shaped, or nostalgia, tinged with camellias and other reasons that cherishes the dream.
